 The Library Foundation established the Martha Muransky Children’s Literacy Fund to support Children’s Summer Reading and children’s literacy programs

Martha MuranskyAt their December meeting, the Board of Trustees, Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County, approved establishing the Martha Muransky Children’s Literacy Fund, named in honor of Martha Muransky (1923 - 2013). The fund was started with $13,035 donated in memory after Mrs. Muransky’s passing in April and will be used to support Children’s Summer Reading and children’s literacy programs.

Mrs. Muransky’s love of reading lives on through a bequest to the Library. Her son, Ed, said, “This is a fitting memory for my mother. She thought so much of the power of reading. She was very well read and very intellectual.” Library Trustees honored the Mrs. Muransky and thanked the Muransky family.

Heidi Daniel, Library Executive Director, noted, “Children’s literacy as at the core of what we do. We hear so many stories of children’s lives being touched by libraries. We want to thank the Muransky family very much and we will use this fund for the betterment of children.”

“Muransky family members have been generous supporters of the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County for many years,” said Deborah Liptak, Library development director. “And this continues with the creation of this fund, which exemplifies the family’s love for Martha, her love of reading, and a desire for the children of Mahoning County to have the opportunities for literacy-enriched programs.” For information on how to contribute to the Martha Muransky Children’s Literacy Fund, contact the Development Office at 330.740.6086.

Library Trustees passed the following resolution recognizing Mrs. Muransky and establishing the fund:

 In Special Recognition of Martha Muransky (1923 - 2013)

The Board of Trustees, Library Director, administration and staff of the Public Library of Youngstown & Mahoning County wish to recognize the Muransky Family and Mrs. Martha Muransky, namesake of The Martha Muransky Children’s Literacy Fund.

Mrs. Muransky, a lifelong resident of the Youngstown area, was an avid reader with an special interest in educating children. She was a devoted mother and grandmother, who put in endless time babysitting, never refusing a request, as well as an excellent cook and baker. A big sports fan, especially of Michigan football, she traveled extensively with her husband following her son Ed's football career.

Martha will always be remembered and loved by her family and friends for her dry sense of humor, frankness, and sharp mind. Although she did not have a college education, she read voraciously and displayed keen intelligence.

Martha’s love of reading lives on through a bequest to the Library. The Martha Muransky Children’s Literacy Fund was set up in her honor and will provide support for the Children’s Summer Reading Club and Children’s Literacy Programs. In her memory and with sincere appreciation, the Library honors Mrs. Martha Muransky.
