Children's Services

Help make your baby brilliant! Look to the Library for the latest information on developmentally appropriate techniques for sharing books with babies and toddlers that spur brain development and foster the development of the six preliteracy skills children must acquire before they can learn to read.  The Library’s Baby Brilliant program offers programs for parents, teachers, and caregivers that clarify the relationship between early brain development and reading to young children.  Librarians reinforce these concepts at library story times for babies, toddlers, and preschool children and suggest simple activities that create literacy experiences in every day activities.  Baby Brilliant Kits, collections of developmentally appropriate books, music, toys, and extension activities, are available for home or classroom use.  For a complete listing of available kits, and for more information about early literacy, visit the Library’s Baby Brilliant page  (http://www.libraryvisit.org/baby.htm).

Additionally, the Library provides the best and most popular children’s books, the best children’s music, audio books, videos, DVDs, and educational and entertaining programs.  The popular Summer Reading Club aims to keep kids reading when school is not in session.  A celebrated author kicks off a summer program agenda that includes magicians, storytellers, and many other special presenters.

Teachers are invited to schedule a class visit at the library, or to request materials for classroom use.  In the event teachers are not able to bring their students to the library, children’s librarians are available to visit schools, nursery schools, and any other agency that serves children.  Call your local library for more information on any of our programs or services and let us share books, reading, and libraries with your child.
