National Library Week is April 12-18: Worlds Connect @ Your Library
It may be as exotic as soaking up Columbian culture through a magazine. Exciting as reading a mystery novel from a private investigator’s perspective. Or as practical as using the Internet to land your next job. However you use your Library, worlds connect there. Visit during National Library Week, April 12-18, and you’ll see for yourself.

“So, You Think You're Prepared for an Asthma Emergency?” - Parents and children, join us for a family program about asthma presented by asthma educators from Akron Children’s Hospital’s Community Outreach, Education and Support Center. Children will view a special puppet show and then attend a story time. Parents will receive helpful information concerning asthma and asthma emergencies. Sign up.

“Tales to Tails” - Sign up to read to a registered therapy dog, which helps develop reading skills, promotes confidence and encourages a love of reading. “Press Play @ Your Library: An After-Hours Gaming Party” - Like MMOGs? How about PS2 or Wii? Then join us for a multiplayer gaming frenzy. “Community Diversity Program Series: Writing a Multicultural Novel” - Mary Claire Mahaney, author of “Osaka Heat,” will share how she created a book set outside our country's familiar borders. The program is part of the Community Diversity Program Series by the YSU Community Diversity Committee. The Library is a partner in this committee, which presents the community with events and performances to promote a better understanding of and appreciation for the diverse nature of the Mahoning Valley. “Friends of PLYMC Bookstore Foreign Language Book Sale” - Don’t miss this sale at the Friends of the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County Bookstore, where all foreign language books will be $1 each. Proceeds benefit all public libraries in the county. “Lunch and Learn: The Zoot Suit Riots by YSU’s Dr. Meahera Gerardo” - In 1943, during WWII, Los Angeles experienced a 10-day race riot in which white servicemen beat and stripped Mexican- and African-American youth who wore zoot suits. Dr. Meahera Gerardo of YSU’s history department will take us back to that time, recreating the events and examining motives that led to them. Join us to learn about these shameful, almost forgotten incidents. Bring a brown-bag lunch; coffee is provided. Sponsored by the Friends of the Public Library of Youngstown & Mahoning County.

“Worker Portraits: Faces of Strength” - How is work changing in the Mahoning Valley? As our economy has shifted over the past three decades, we work in different kinds of jobs, but work remains something many of us have in common. Even as unemployment increases, both individuals and our community define our identities according to the work we once did and the work we hope to do. This exhibit, at the Newport Library during the month of April, presents the stories of a dozen area workers, from a bus driver to a schoolteacher, factory workers to retail clerks. The display is presented by Dr. Sherry Linkon, Youngstown State University professor of English and American Studies and co-director of the Center for Working Class Studies.

FREE TAX HELP

“Tax Counseling for the Elderly” - The IRS-sponsored TCE program provides free tax help to people age 60 and older. As part of the program, AARP will offer the Tax-Aide counseling program during the filing season. Trained and certified volunteers will be at four libraries and two additional locations to assist taxpayers with IRS tax returns. However, taxpayers with significant self-employment income, capital gains or complex transactions should seek the counsel of a professional tax preparer. Call 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday to schedule appointments, which are required.

“Volunteer Income Tax Assistance” - During the filing season, the IRS-sponsored VITA program offers free tax help to low- to moderate-income people who cannot prepare their own tax returns. VITA volunteers are scheduling appointments at the following site to assist these taxpayers.

“Annual Spring Tea Fundraiser” - Once again, we’re stirring up a lovely day in the Poland Branch Library meeting room! Join us for a blend of piano music by Diane Yazvac and a presentation on Corrie ten Boom by Cheryl Buxamusa. All the while, we’ll enjoy treats and tea. Sweeten our time together by toting along your treasured teacup and, if you wish, come dressed in your best hat and gloves. Mix in a raffle and the afternoon will be just your cup of tea! The event costs $20 per person and benefits the Springfield Branch Library and the Friends of the Public Library of Youngstown & Mahoning County. SPECIAL EVENT

“Plant the Seed to Read Children’s Book Fair” - The Public Library of Youngstown & Mahoning County is a co-sponsor of the third annual Plant the Seed to Read Children’s Book Fair, which is 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. April 4 at Mill Creek MetroParks’ Fellows Riverside Gardens. Special guest is children’s book illustrator Tim Bowers, the Library’s 2006 Summer Reading Club Kickoff presenter. There will also be a visit from The Magic School Bus and Ms. Frizzle, as well as Word Girl, Sid the Science Kid, YSU’s Pete the Penguin and the Library’s Ready-to-Read Raccoon! Throughout the day, families can enjoy guest authors, storytellers, puppets, science experiments, painting demonstrations by Chris Leeper, and other activities. Snacks will also be available. Admission is free. Strollers are not permitted indoors. The book fair is sponsored by the Altrusa Club of Youngstown, Mill Creek MetroParks, Western Reserve Public Media and the Library.
