YOUNGSTOWN, OH (October 5, 2005) – Thymely Events, Inc., owner of Chapters Cafes in two branches of the Public Library of Youngstown & Mahoning County in northeast Ohio, had its success recognized at the Oct. 5 Annual Greater Mahoning Valley Growth Awards breakfast. Thymely Events won the highest award, the Pinnacle Award, for Increase in Employees, in the category of Fewer than 100 Employees, and received an award for Increase in Sales. Thymely Events, Inc., got started in the library cafe business in 2001, when a new branch library opened in Poland, Ohio. The cafe was such a success, that a similar cafe opened in 2002 in the newly constructed Austintown branch library. Butler Institute of American Art’s cafe, Winslow’s, is also operated by Thymely Events, Inc., and opened in 2003. Lynn Porch, Claudia Wheland and Rodney Ann Madeline, owners of Thymely Events, Inc., have seen their business grown from the three owners in 2001 to 12 full-time and 22 part-time employees currently. Along with the cafes, Thymely Events also offers full-service catering, both off-site and in library meeting rooms. "The cafes, while not a part of the Library’s mission, compliment library service," said Carlton A. Sears, Library Director. "The cafes in Poland and Austintown libraries add value - both to the Library and the community. " Cafes give patrons a place to meet or have coffee or a light meal while visiting the Library. The cafes also help the Public Library of Youngstown & Mahoning County address declining state revenues. The library system has been losing about $1 million a year in state funding since 2001. Six percent of the revenue for Chapters Cafes comes back to the Library, bringing in over $83,000 since the cafes opened. The Annual Growth Awards are sponsored by the Youngstown-Warren Area Regional Chamber and the Warren P. Williamson, Jr., College of Business Administration, Youngstown State University. |
