Library Summer Reading Club for All Ages Runs June 1 - August 17

MAHONING COUNTY (May 8, 2013/For Immediate Release) - There's something for everyone in this year's Summer Reading Club at the Public Library of Youngstown & Mahoning County (PLYMC).  Babies and their parents, kids, teens and adults can participate for fun and a chance to win prizes!  Visit a Mahoning County public library near you or sign up online on or after June 1 to register for this year's Summer Reading Club, which runs from June 1 through August 17. Kids who read 30 hours are invited to a "Bad Kitty Breakfast Bash" with author Nick Bruel in July.

Also new this June - the Library is partnering with Grow Youngstown (see information below). East and Poland libraries will be pick-up points for fresh locally grown produce. Don't miss Grow Youngstown's taste-testing demos in July and August.

To make it even easier for you to participate, the Library is offering a NEW online registration for this year's Summer Reading Club. Click here on or after June 1 to sign up

"Dig Into Reading" - Children's Summer Reading

MEET NICK BRUEL, AUTHOR OF THE 'BAD KITTY' BOOKS

Meet "Bad Kitty" Author Nick Bruel - Meet the creator of the popular Bad Kitty books and hear how he gets his ideas for Kitty's adventures. Fun for the whole family. Don't forget to finish your 30 hours of reading for an invitation to the Bad Kitty Breakfast Bash which will be held the morning of July 30.

"Bad Kitty Breakfast Bash" - For 30 hours read, you'll also qualify for an invitation to the "Bad Kitty Breakfast Bash," where you'll enjoy meeting and sharing breakfast with Nick Bruel, author of the Bad Kitty books, to be held at Poland Library on July 30. This special breakfast bash, catered by Kravitz Deli, is only available to Summer Reading participants who complete their 30 hours by July 29, so don't miss out!

Grow Youngstown Digs the Library!

In an innovative partnership, the Library will partner with Grow Youngstown CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) to provide a space for pick-up of locally grown fresh produce and will present two special taste-testing demos in the library.

Beginning in June, the East and Poland library branches, participants may pick up their fresh local produce here:

East Library, Tuesdays at 5-6 p.m., lobby area

Poland Library, Tuesdays, 5:30-7:30 p.m., lower level, facilitated by Kravitz Delicatessen

To participate in this program, potential customers must contact Grow Youngstown and make arrangements in advance. For more information, or to order a share, go to http://www.growyoungstown.org/csa.html or call 330-286-0688.

Grow Youngstown also provides subsidy to low-income families and accepts EBT.  Participation helps build a strong local food economy that supports producers and ensures healthy food access to more local families.The organization offers a great nutritional value because food travels a short distance to your plate, supports the local economy, is a good price, offers variety, and comes from sustainable sources. Grow Youngstown is Mahoning Valley's only CSA program and is part of the rapidly growing national movement towards locally produced foods and healthy farming practices.

In partnership with the Library, representatives from Grow Youngstown will present a free program open to the public.  Join them for a taste-testing demo and learn creative ways to prepare local produce.

Write Here. Write Now. Writing Camp for 5th - 8th Graders - Kids going into grades 5 through 8 are invited to register for the Library's weeklong writing camp. Each 2-hour session from Monday through Thursday will be filled with writing prompts, writing games, group activities, and lots of quiet time for writing. On Friday, parents are encouraged to attend a gala with each child reading an excerpt of their work. Following the gala is a guest author event with Kim Brown at 10 a.m., which is open to the public. Austintown Friends of the Library- Valley resident Richard Lander brings Joseph Green Butler Jr. to life. Lander has been a docent for the Butler Art Museum, on Wick  Avenue, in Youngstown.  He has researched and studied the history and life of Joseph Green Butler, Jr., an American Industrialist, civic leader and historian.  Butler is perhaps best known for establishing the first museum dedicated to the works of American Artists.
