he Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County is pleased to announce the addition of a unique resource provided by the Industrial Information Institute for Education, Inc., the historic radio program, “Tales of the Mahoning and Shenango Valleys.”

The collection consists of 193 audiocassette tapes featuring dramatizations of historical happenings in the Mahoning and Shenango Valleys. These performances, which were produced by the Institute and broadcast throughout the 1950s and again during our Nation’s Bicentennial celebration, describe many of the events and people that made history in our community during the 18th and 19th centuries.

Topics dramatized include: Pioneer Life, Industry and Trade, Local Personalities, Politics, Slavery and Civil Rights, Women’s Rights, Native Americans, Animals and the Wilderness, the Stage Coach, Railroads, Canals, and Warfare.

This non-circulating collection will be archived and processed by Genealogy and Local History Librarian Tim Seman of the Information Services Department. The collection will be housed at Main Library and tapes will be available for public use in Main’s Information Services Department this spring.
