Lunch and Learn at the Library • 2007-2008

The popular Lunch and Learn Series, co-sponsored by Friends of the Public Library of Youngstown & Mahoning County and YSU English Department, is back again for another season filled with informative and fascinating speakers starting October 2007.

Be sure to join us for this series of free programs held from 12-1 pm at Main Library on the second Tuesday of each month from October through May.

Bring a brown bag lunch. Coffee is provided.

“‘The Turn of the Screw' with Carol Weakland”

The Library will take on an eerie presence as it welcomes back gifted actress Carol Weakland in her adaptation of Henry James' most famous ghost story, “The Turn of the Screw,” a chilling tale told by the governess of two young charges.

“‘Black Soldiers in the Civil War' with Steffan Jones”

Local historian Steffan Jones has done much research on the achievements of the U.S. Civil War's black soldiers. In this program, Jones will highlight the soldiers' bravery and successes, to which long-deserved recognition is owed.

“Dana School of Music in Concert”

Sip to the sound of music swirling through the Library during this annual visit from musicians of Youngstown State University's Dana School of Music. Coffee, tea and cookies will be provided.

“‘What's New at the Butler?' with Dr. Lou Zona”

Dr. Louis A. Zona, director of The Butler Institute of Amercan Art, will review recent happenings at the Youngstown museum and its branches, such as the museum's expansion; new painting, “Lincoln the Railsplitter,” by Norman Rockwell; and more.

“‘Environmental History and Conservation' with Dr. Brian Bonhomme”

Dr. Brian Bonhomme of Youngstown State University's history department has authored several publications on a new field of history – environmentalism and conservation. Through this lens, Bonhomme will reinterpret such events as the European discovery of America and the debate on global warming.

“‘Lincoln's Presidency' with Gerald A. Payn”

Noted Abraham Lincoln presenter Gerald Payn of Wooster, Ohio, will dramatize the trials and tribulations of Lincoln's presidency. Mr. Payn will highlight the turmoil of the 1860 election, the difficult decision to go to war the following year, and the difficulties with the Union generals early on. We are delighted to have this fine dramatization.

“‘Searching for Clues' with Jim Fisher”

Jim Fisher, former FBI agent and professor of criminal investigation, criminal law and forensic science at Edinboro University, will discuss his seventh and newest true crime book, “ Forensics Under Fire: Are Bad Science and Dueling Experts Corrupting Criminal Justice? ” The book exposes forensic science as it really is, not as it is portrayed on TV, covering fingerprint identification, DNA analysis, bite-mark wounds, handwriting and more.
