Automobile Service Manuals
Youngstown Public Library owns a retrospective and current collection of service manuals published by automobile manufacturers for domestic and import cars, trucks and vans. The domestic manuals include almost all of the major manufacturers and models. Many manuals date back to the 1940s, with a few 1920 and 1930 editions scattered throughout the collection. Most truck manuals date back to the 1960s with a few 1930s, 1940s, and 1950s available for certain makes. For imports, the collection includes manufacturers' manuals for Honda and Toyota going back to 1988 and 1979 respectively. The collection also includes several older, miscellaneous import manuals such as Audi, Triumph, and Volkswagen. (Note: The automobile service manual collection may not include every year in a series.)
The Library also owns manuals that are published by companies well known for their expertise in automotive repair: Motor, Chilton and Mitchell. Motor auto repair manuals for domestic cars date back to 1935, and for trucks back to 1939. Motor import manuals are available back to 1960. There are also Motor manuals for heavy truck repair dating back to 1977. Chilton manuals for domestic cars are available from 1940, and trucks (including some imports) from 1961. Chilton manuals for import cars date back to 1973. Mitchell manuals can be found for domestic cars going back to 1961, and for trucks, 1965. Mitchell import cars and trucks date back to 1961. There are also some specialized Mitchell manuals in the collection, including mechanical parts and labor estimating guides and a few interchange manuals.

Census
The Genealogy Room at the Main Library has the census for all of Ohio for both 1820 and 1830, and for selected counties for 1840 -1880 and 1900 - 1930. There are no Ohio census records for 1890.

Census indexes are available for the entire census period noted above, including the Ohio Soundex/Miracode for 1900 and 1910. The collection also contains selected census indexes for other states. For census materials not held at our library, limited access is available through an online subscription service to Ancestry.com or by ordering census film through a microfilm rental program.


City Directory
For current information, Main Library and most of the branches have the most recent Polk city directory for Youngstown and the surrounding vicinities. Main Library and some of the branches also have the Haines criss-cross directory. For historical information, the Genealogy Room at the Main library has Youngstown city directories dating from 1869 to the present, and Warren city directories dating from 1971. Government Documents

Grant Center
The Grant Center at Main Library has resource materials which can help nonprofit organizations locate sources of funding. The center offers books, magazines, information on philanthropic companies, plus orientation sessions. The Main Library is a cooperating collection library for the Foundation Center in New York City. Materials in the Grant Center include books such as Foundation Fundamentals, Foundation Center's Guide to Proposal Writing, and Foundation Giving; indexes such as the Foundation Grants Index; periodicals such as Chronicle of Philanthropy; and directories such as the Annual Register of Grant Support, Ohio Grants Guide and Foundation Directory. The center also maintains files on local foundations and receives some foundation annual reports.

Local Newspapers
The earliest local/regional newspapers in the library's collection date from 1839. Several underwent name changes and ownership through the years, including the Mahoning Vindicator (later Vindicator), whose holdings date from 1869 to the present. Another area newspaper that had a lengthy run before being purchased by the Vindicator was the Youngstown Telegram (1887- July 1936). Several ethnic newspapers covering local life in the Black, German, Hungarian, Italian, Jewish, and Slovak communities are also available All newspapers are available for viewing and photocopying in the Periodical Microform Center at the Main Library.

Standards and Building Codes
The librarians in the Information Services Department at the Main Library can search for full text standards from the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) and the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) via an online subscription service. Information Services also houses the Standards collection of books. The collection contains national standards, such as the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) codes, and the American Society of Heating, Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE), as well as architectural, construction, electrical, mechanical, and plumbing codes. The collection also includes some regional codes, such as the Ohio Basic Building Code, and international codes, such as the standards created by the International Organization of Standards for ISO 9000 and ISO 14000. Some local building codes are also available, although most can only be found in the codified ordinances, shelved in various locations, of such places as Youngstown, Canfield, Lowellville, New Middletown, Poland, Sebring, and Struthers.

Steel Collection
The Steel Collection includes materials that describe the iron and steel industry with an emphasis on Youngstown and the surrounding area. Holdings include approximately 360 catalogued books, bound copies of local newspaper clippings, pamphlets, serials (national and local), and ephemera. These materials are reference items that cannot be checked out.
