Graphic Arts and Communication Specialist

The Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County (OH) seeks a Full-time Graphic Arts and Communication Specialist to perform the day-to-day printing tasks for the Library, including some graphic design and copy writing work for many of the printed materials produced by the PR Department. This position will report to the Communications and PR Director.

Responsibilities.  (1) Completes in-house printing projects. Develops and prints materials. Operates printers and related equipment. Performs finishing processes; including laminating, collating, stapling, and folding. (2) Ensures operation of equipment by completing preventative maintenance requirements, troubleshooting malfunctions, calling for repairs, and maintaining equipment inventory. Maintains a safe, clean, and orderly work environment by complying with safety and maintenance procedures, rules, and regulations. (3) Facilitates the Communications and Public Relations Department in providing needed materials for meetings, programs, and events. Distribution of materials through inter-library system as needed. Maintains up-to-date records of items printed and produced. (4) Edits copy developed for intranet, printed materials, and public web site.  Composes copy as directed. (5) Designs layouts on assigned projects. Produces signage and materials for regular and special projects. (6) Meets with salespeople, researches for best price, and orders supplies for Graphic Arts projects. Keeps a running total, when needed, to stay within purchase order allowance; orders related items for other departments upon request.

Qualifications.  Associate’s degree or equivalent combination of education, training and experience in related field is required. Bachelor’s degree is preferred. Training, knowledge, and experience in operating printers and print-shop equipment. Knowledge and experience working with computers, both PC and Mac. Experience and high level of skill in using Adobe products – In-Design, Illustrator, Photoshop. Knowledge of Microsoft programs – Word, Publisher, Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint. Graphic design skills. Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written. 7.  Experience composing marketing text for a variety of audiences. Some transporting of library materials or equipment up to 25 lbs. Majority of work is performed in a general office/print shop environment. Must be comfortable working with and around equipment.

Work Schedule.  Full-time and based at Main Library, although travel to other library branches is required occasionally. The employee will work 37.5 hours per week, typically 8-4:30 with an hour lunch. The position requires availability for extended or non-traditional hours as needed to perform job duties.

Compensation.  This is a non-exempt position with a starting rate of $14.97/hour ($29,200/year) and an excellent fringe benefit package including a pension plan with the Ohio Public Employees Retirement System (OPERS).
