Systems Specialist – IT Department
The Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County (OH) seeks an experienced Systems Specialist for the Information Technology Department. The Systems Specialist configures, installs, and services computer, network, and peripheral equipment. This position also assists the System Administrator with the development, operation, maintenance, and evaluation of the Library’s use of technology resources, with an emphasis on application and operating system software. The Systems Specialist provides direct technical support and training to Library staff on hardware and software issues as well as acts as a back up in the System Administrator’s absence.
Responsibilities. (1) Provide direct technical support and training as needed to staff and occasionally patrons on hardware and software issues. (2) Maintain and administer computer networks and related computing environments including computer hardware, systems software, applications software, and all configurations. (3) Diagnose, troubleshoot, and resolve hardware, software, or other network and system problems, and replace defective components when necessary. Perform data backups and disaster recovery operations. Plan, coordinate, and implement network security measures to protect data, software, and hardware. (5) Research, recommend, and implement new technologies to the department. (6) Coordinate with vendors and company personnel to facilitate purchases.
Qualifications. Associate’s Degree in Computer Science or related field is required. Work experience in a library setting preferred. Applicants with significant progress completed toward a preferred degree, coupled with relevant library work experience, may also be considered. This position requires an ability to effectively communicate and exchange information, collect, compile and prepare work documents and operate standard business office equipment. Strong computer, analytical thinking, and interpersonal skills are required. Traveling to other library branches in the Mahoning County Library system is also required. Must be available for on-call, extended or non-traditional hours as needed to perform job duties. Ability to reach, bend, climb, squat, lift and push up to 50 lbs. and stand for long periods of time. Technical experience required:
· Demonstrated expertise working with computer hardware and operating systems, particularly Windows based operating systems
· Ability to troubleshoot computer issues as they arise
· Strong technology skills and understanding of technology trends
· Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
· Strong critical thinking and problem solving skills
· Experience with VMware preferred
· Strong understanding of network and security standards and theories
· Familiar with Cisco equipment, switching, and routing
· Basic programming skills – HTML, PHP, PERL
Compensation. The starting salary is $38,800 (negotiable with experience) with an excellent fringe benefit package including a pension plan with the Ohio Public Employees Retirement System (OPERS).
