Five Binge-Worthy TV Shows for History Lovers
If you’re like me, you’ve recently found yourself with the ability to catch up on a lot of TV shows or watch some new shows that you might have had on your “to watch” list for a while. I am a lover of history and film, so I think that it’s pretty obvious that I would love television shows that span throughout different eras and time periods, and I’m here to give you all my top five history-driven television shows (in no particular order).
1. Westworld (HBO, PLYMC DVD Collection)
Imagine a future where you could go to the past. That is Westworld. This action-thriller is set in a futuristic immersion wild-west theme park where humans and robots intermingle seamlessly. If you like a little bit of sci-fi with your westerns, this TV show is for you. Based on the 1973 film of the same name. (TV-MA for adult themes, violence, and strong language.)
2. Turn: Washington’s Spies (AMC, Netflix, PLYMC DVD Collection)
Set during the Revolutionary war, this AMC drama digs into the behind-the-warzone secrets of our Founding Fathers and shows the origins of the famous “Culper Ring”. Based on the book Washington’s Spies: The Story of America’s First Spy Ring by Alexander Rose, available on Overdrive. Get ready to get Revolutionary! (TV-14 for some adult themes, strong language, and violence.)
3. G.L.O.W. (Netflix)
Bust out that Spandex and jump back into the 1980’s with this Emmy award winning, jam-packed drama/comedy about the beginnings of the real-life “Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling,” America’s first all-female wrestling league! This show features GLOW’s rise to fame and hilariously portrays some of the real ladies who literally fought their way to the top! Recently a graphic novel series has emerged that centers on the series – available on Hoopla! (TV-MA for strong language, adult humor, and adult themes.)
4. The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel (Amazon Prime)
By the quick-witted writers of Gilmore Girls, Miriam Maisel is not your ordinary 1950’s housewife. It’s hard to be when you’re trying to establish yourself as a stand-up comedian in the grimy Brooklyn nightclub scene. Heat up your briskets and snuggle in. Paling around with Lenny Bruce in the Hamptons have never been this hilarious. Soundtrack available on Hoopla! (TV-MA for adult humor, alcohol and drug use, and adult themes.)
5. Penny Dreadful (Netflix, Hulu, Showtime, Amazon Prime, PLYMC DVD Collection)
Set in the 1800s, this horror series brings your favorite gothic literary characters to life. An explorer, an American gunslinger, a mad scientist, and a psychic medium make up four unlikely partners who team up to combat supernatural terrors in Victorian era England. Check out the comic series based on the show – available now on Hoopla! (TV-MA for violence, adult themes, language, and frightening imagery.)
If you’re a history fanatic, you can be sure that even more of your historical fiction faves can be found for free online through Overdrive and Hoopla – all you need is your library card to access them!
