Your New Family Engagement Area at Main Library
We proudly welcome you to our new Family Engagement Area! Come visit us at Main Library and explore our youth collections, and activities for all ages!
Family engagement is a shared responsibility among families, educators, and communities to support children’s learning and development. Family engagement begins at birth and continues through young adulthood. It happens everywhere children learn—especially at the library.
This is the model the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County has been running on and we hold it dear to our hearts. We believe that having hands-on involvement in the learning process is the key to getting the most out of the learning process. We have a focus on early childhood literacy and imaginative play, as well as fostering a love for STEAM (Science, Engineering, Art, and Math) through interactive toys and programs. We have a dedicated space for teens, children, and makers to explore. We want our community to dive into new hobbies, interests, and enjoy our wonderful collection of books, movies and more.
In the children’s playscape, enjoy the kitchen with an assortment of pots, pans, and dishes. There’s a vegetable garden where kids can plant and harvest veggies too. We encourage collaboration, imagination, and thinking outside the box. One of our favorite features in the playscape is the treehouse. Featuring a giant light-up peg board and a beautiful 8 ft tall tree, this is the perfect place to let creativity run wild!
The STEAM table is surrounded by our non-fiction collection, which includes take-home kits! We will have activities out and ready for you to explore. Our goal with this space is to have children dive into the scientific process. By asking questions, investigating and experimenting, children will be engaged in the world around them!
Cultivating curiosity is a goal at the library and that is a focus of our DIY space. We want patrons to have the chance to work with equipment that they may not have access to otherwise and build their skills. Workforce skills development is a key component to this space, as it will have a recording studio where you can create one of a kind video resumes using professional tools. Watch for the DIY space to open very soon.
The teen space provides a collaborative atmosphere with furniture that is easy to move around, white boards to map out your plans, and plenty of places to plug in and charge. The YA collection is housed in this space, with hundreds of titles to browse. We want to foster community partnerships that will broaden programming and offer teens what they want to see.
