Community Invited to Open House for Remodeled Struthers Library
The Struthers Library has a new look! The interior has been remodeled and refreshed and the Public Library of Youngstown & Mahoning County (PLYMC), is inviting the public to have a look at an Open House from 3-5 p.m. on Tuesday, October 30. Patrons are also invited to visit the library throughout the day to see the newly remodeled branch.
Library Executive Director Aimee Fifarek says, “The Struthers Library has a new, inviting interior and new features. We hope the community will come in to have a look. And while they are there they can sign up for a Library Card if they don’t already have one – and check out some books to take home!” The branch has an updated meeting room with kitchenette for community gatherings, a new teen area, new furnishings and more. Ms. Fifarek notes that the community was influential in the project as she and Library staff members talked with community and school leaders, as well as teens, to gather input into what they would like to see in their library.
Kindergarten Readiness Station
As part of the activities, there will be crafts for kids and the introduction of a Kindergarten Readiness Station, featuring a fun activity that will help young children develop a skill needed to be successful in school.
A series of Kindergarten Readiness Stations will be introduced by the Library soon, and patrons visiting Struthers get the first look at one of these stations. The first skill being targeted is part of the Social and Emotional Development Domain. Children will be able to create different facial expressions using a variety of eyes and mouths and kids will make a sad, surprised or happy face. The goal will be for children to recognize and name the feelings associated with a face. Being able to recognize and name emotions is an important part of social and emotional development.
Activities at the Kindergarten Readiness Stations will change regularly and will target the development of skills across all five of the developmental domains of school readiness.
The new facility will also be celebrated on at 11 a.m. on Saturday, November 3, with a performance for kids of all ages with Outback Ray’s Amazing Animal Show. Outback Ray will share his knowledge of the animals in his unique “family.” Learning will be fun and exciting while you hold and cuddle his amazing animals. Struthers Library has been updated! Take part in crafts and activities to celebrate the library’s new look.
