Dr. David Ritchie Will Be Remembered for Dedication and Service to the Library

Dr. David Ritchie, 83, President of the Library Board of Trustees, passed away Friday, July 9, 2021. He was first appointed to the Library Board on January 23, 1997, and voted Board President effective October 1, 2002, a position he held until his passing.

Library Executive Director and CEO Aimee Fifarek expressed her sympathies and noted: “Dr. David Ritchie provided invaluable service to the Library, and to the Library Trustees with whom he worked, throughout his long tenure with the Board of Trustees.  We will miss his wisdom, his kindness, and the good humor he brought to all our work.  Dr. Ritchie’s dedication to his community stands as a model of what public service should be.  We at the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County will strive to uphold that legacy in all we do.”

In over 21 years on the Board of Trustees, Dr. Ritchie’s contributions are too numerous to mention. These are but a few. He helped guide the Library through building projects, including the current Main Library Renovation, plus the Austintown, Campbell, Canfield, Michael Kusalaba, Poland, Springfield, Tri-Lakes, Newport and East branches, and the renovation of the Boardman Library. He assisted in the passage of several levies during his tenure, which spanned three Library Directors.

Ms. Fifarek said of Dr. Ritchie, “His library legacy is strong and lasting. He will be remembered for years to come for his dedication to libraries and his desire to enrich our community.”

Austintown Schools have noted that arrangements  for Dr. Ritchie will be held on Friday, July 16. Calling hours will take place from 2 to 5:45 p.m. in the Fitch High School Auditorium. Funeral services will begin at 6 p.m. Learn more>>
