Feb. 4 – Free Reading Tutors in Two Libraries
Ohio Reading Corps (ORC) has partnered with The Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County (PLYMC) to offer free reading tutoring to K-3 students. For 6 weeks in February and March, ORC members will provide after-school reading assistance to K-3 students. Tutors will be available Wednesdays from 4-6 p.m. at the Boardman Library and Michael Kusalaba Library on February 6, 13, 20, 27, and March 6,13. Registration is not required-just walk in!
Ohio Reading Corps is a grant-funded AmeriCorps program. Members complete a year of service at numerous school districts across the Mahoning Valley providing in-school tutoring to below-proficient students. Math tutors also serve locally through the partner program of Ohio Math Corps. Members are vetted, trained and supervised through the Mahoning County Educational Service Center (MCESC).
Library Executive Director Aimee Fifarek said, “The Library is pleased to be partnering with Ohio Reading Corps on this new offering. Our libraries are a wonderful place to connect students to a wide variety of reading and learning materials. We hope that our area’s students will take part in this program to strengthen their reading skills, which will strengthen their success in school.”
Sarah Laite, Ohio Reading Corps/ Ohio Math Corps Regional Coordinator, MCESC, worked with the Library’s Early Learning Team Leader, Pamela Brockway, on arranging this tutoring opportunity at PLYMC. Brockway noted, “This program builds on the Early Literacy skills that our librarians focus on in preschool story times. When children improve their reading skills, they will see that reading opens many doors.”
Laite said, “For a struggling student, reading tutoring is an invaluable resource. We are thrilled to be collaborating with the library to expand our reach and serve even more children in our communities. The benefits of tutoring are numerous. Members love to share their success stories-big and small. In our schools, we have seen students jump an entire year in their reading level in just a few months. Sometimes it is seeing that spark when a student finally gets the ‘a-ha!’ moment or declares their new-found love of reading. Our members come from all walks of life and always bring their whole selves to their tutoring. Most would argue that the children give more back to us than we could ever hope to give to them.”
