Home Savings Charitable Foundation donates $10,000 to Summer Discovery

YOUNGSTOWN (July 6, 2016/For Immediate Release) – The Home Savings Charitable Foundation presented a check in the amount of $10,000 to the Public Library of Youngstown & Mahoning County (PLYMC) today in sponsorship of the Author Breakfast for the Library’s Summer Discovery Program.

Summer Discovery is summer reading fun and learning for all ages, which runs through August 13. For the children’s program, “On Your Mark, Get Set… READ!,” participants will complete badges by reading, attending Library programs and/or doing activities. Children who complete 8 badges by July 23 get a very special invitation to a breakfast featuring Nancy Krulic, author of the Katie Kazoo and George Brown books. The author’s appearance is thanks to the generous donation by the Home Savings Charitable Foundation.

“Get in the Game: READ!” is the theme for teens this summer. For adults, the theme is, “Exercise Your Mind. READ!”

Heidi M. Daniel, Library Executive Director, thanked the foundation, saying, “The Library is pleased to accept this check from the Home Savings Charitable Foundation. It’s wonderful to acknowledge a donation which supports reading and learning programs that strengthen literacy in our community.”

Timothy Bresnahan, Library Trustee and Chair of the Board’s Development Committee, noted, “We’re thankful to the Home Savings Charitable Foundation for recognizing the importance of reading and of the Library’s summer program. Our Summer Discovery Program is important in battling Summer Slide, because studies have shown that children who don’t read in the summer can lose reading skills during the break from school.”

Deborah Liptak, Development Director, welcomed the generous donation, saying, “Each year, the Library’s Summer Discover attracts thousands of children and teens from throughout Mahoning County. If the children successfully complete the program they are invited to a free breakfast at Stambaugh Auditorium. Last year we had over 600 children attend the breakfast; we are hoping to grow that number each year. We are thankful for this $10,000 donation from the Home Savings Charitable Foundation.”

Josephine Nolfi, Director of Programming and Youth Services, says, “The Home Savings Charitable Foundation’s generosity helps the Library present a best-selling author to children who have been active participants in this year’s Summer Discovery. It’s heartwarming to be able to provide such a reward for a summer of dedication to reading.”
