Library Now Offering Two New Services ‘Playaway Launchpads’ Learning Tablets, Plus Magazines, Newspapers through Overdrive
YOUNGSTOWN (November 3, 2015) – The Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County (PLYMC) is offering two new services to library cardholders: Playaway Launchpad learning tablets for children are available for checkout on PLYMC adult full-service Library Cards at Main Library and the Austintown, Canfield, Boardman, Newport and Poland branches, and downloadable magazines and newspapers are available on any PLYMC Library Card, including the new Digital Card, through the Library’s website, provided by Overdrive.
Playaway Launchpads are designed just for kids and are pre-loaded with high-quality, ad-free apps that are both fun and educational. Apps are grouped onto Launchpad tablets by subject area, theme, grade level, and age, making it easy for parents and kids to choose a tablet with the content most appealing to them.
Josephine Nolfi, Library Programming and Youth Services Director, says, “Parents can feel secure knowing that their children are using a tablet that has nothing but high-quality learning apps loaded on it. Kids can pick a topic of interest and learn math, science, language arts, and critical thinking skills while they appear to be playing. This is effortless learning that entertains kids as they learn.”
Playaway notes that every Launchpad is 100% secure, providing hours of interactive learning and play without the risk of exposure to unintended content. The Launchpad content collection spans subject areas from math and science to critical thinking and creativity, and features themed learning packs including animals, princesses, fantasy, nature and more.
A custom designed user interface gives children the opportunity to make every Launchpad experience their own by creating a personal avatar, plus an informational console gives parents and educators feedback about time spent on the tablet.
Launchpad is powered by an Android operating system and features a 7” high-definition touch screen, external speaker, universal audio jack and a durable, protective bumper. As with all Playaway pre‐loaded products, patrons can simply check out a Playaway Launchpad tablet and play. No connectivity or downloading is required for use. For more information about Playaway Launchpad go to the PLYMC website, LibraryVisit.org, or my.playaway.com.
