The Library Receives $6,000 Grant from the Community Foundation for Summer Discovery Program
YOUNGSTOWN (July 6, 2018/For Immediate Release) – The Community Foundation of the Mahoning Valley is supporting literacy with a generous donation of $6,000 to the Public Library of Youngstown & Mahoning County (PLYMC) for the 2018 Summer Discovery Program, “Libraries Rock!” The Kennedy Family Fund and First Place Community Fund, component funds of the Community Foundation of the Mahoning Valley, were the grant-makers.
The Community Foundation of the Mahoning Valley is operated exclusively for charitable, educational and scientific purposes which effectively assist and promote the well-being of residents of Mahoning and Trumbull Counties. Information about the Foundation can be found at www.cfmv.org.
“We greatly appreciate the generous support of the Community Foundation for our Summer Discovery program,” said Library Executive Director Aimee Fifarek. “It is gratifying to see this level of commitment to literacy. Through the Library, the whole community has an opportunity to benefit from our services and programming during Summer Reading.”
This year’s Summer Discovery program began in May and runs through July. Summer Discovery brings in thousands of young people throughout Mahoning County each year and offers something for everyone, from babies to kids to teens to adults. “With generous support such as this, the Library can bring in quality presenters that educate as well as entertain,” said Janet Loew, Library Communications and Public Relations Director.
“The Library much appreciates the generosity of the Community Foundation, which continues to support literacy and the library,” said Deborah Liptak, Library Development Director. Donations to the Library can be made by contacting Mrs. Liptak at 330-744-6086 or at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Josephine Nolfi, Director of Programming and Youth Services, says, “Summer Discovery promotes reading throughout the summer, when school is not in session. This is important so that kids will be well-prepared when they return to school in the fall.”
About the Public Library of Youngstown & Mahoning County (PLYMC)
The Public Library of Youngstown & Mahoning County has been serving the community since 1880. The Library has 15 locations throughout Mahoning County and offers a variety of services and materials for information, education and entertainment. Libraries are community gathering places, offering meeting room spaces and programs which bring people together. At PLYMC, customers connect with the materials and services they need to inspire them and enrich their lives. The Summer Discovery Program is an important means for students to avoid “summer slide,” the term used to describe a loss of reading skills that frequently happens during the summer when students are out of school for an extended period.
