West Library Now Closed for New Michael Kusalaba Branch

YOUNGSTOWN (April 6, 2016)  – The current West Library, located at 2815 Mahoning Ave., closed at the end of day, 6 p.m., on Saturday, April 30, to prepare for construction of the new Michael Kusalaba Branch at that location.

The branch is part of the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County system and is being named in honor of a donation from the Michael Kusalaba Fund of the Youngstown Foundation of $1.68 million dollars for construction of the new library. The branch is estimated to cost $2.9 million. Library officials hope to open the new branch sometime in 2017.

Over the summer, Library staff will clean out the building and saved items will be retained by the Library. The Library and Friends of the Library will hold public sale of books and other items that will not be used in the new building within the next few months. That sale will take place in the current building before it is demolished.

Architect Ron Faniro is currently completing building schematics for the interior. The Library is planning a public meeting to unveil the exterior and interior design. A date has not been set, but it is expected to be within the next few months.

Patrons who have library materials checked out can return them to the West Library before April 30 or at any of the other 14 libraries in the PLYMC system, particularly the nearest libraries, Main Library and the Austintown branch, which are open six days a week. Book drops will remain on the West Library site for several months.
