March 2026 Resource Spotlight: Women’s History Month

As we continue through America’s 250th anniversary year, we’ve arrived at March, which is Women’s History Month. Did you know that Youngstown had a female physician as early as 1873? Curious about other local firsts for women? Interested in learning about famous women throughout history and around the world?

Biography Resources

Biography Reference Bank, opens a new window makes it easy to locate over 14,000 biographies of famous women.

To search:

  • Click Advanced Search 
  • Limit your results: Names with Biographies 
  • Gender: Female 
  • Click Search

Biography Reference Source, opens a new window also provides thousands of unique, full-text biographies.

To search:

  • Use Advanced Search 
  • Keyword search women, female, woman, or females
  • Limit Document Type to Biography
  • Click Search

History Resources

History Reference Source, opens a new window focuses on both U.S. and world history.

To search:

  • Select Explore Topics
  • Click Women's History
  • From there, you can browse subtopics, such as:
    • 1848-1920: Suffrage Movement 
    • Key Figures in Women’s History 
    • Women in Colo­nial America 
    • Women in the Revo­lu­tionary War 
    • Women in World War II 

You can also do a keyword search on “Women’s History” which finds over 16,000 results. The results can be narrowed down using various search result filters.  

MyHeritage Library Edition, opens a new window is both a genealogy and history resource, featuring a huge selection of digitized newspapers.

To find Youngstown Vindicator articles about women:

  • Click Newspapers from the Categories column
  • Select Show All 
  • Scroll down and click Ohio Newspapers 
  • In the Last Name field, type: First Woman 
  • In Publication Place, type: Youngstown 
  • Click Search 

Over 6,000 articles are found. You can narrow results using the filters to refine by publication year. 

General Resources

Explora for Primary Schools, opens a new window is designed for students through 5th grade. Search "Women's History" or go to Explore all topics and click "W" to browse Women's Rights and Women's Suffrage.

Explora for Middle Schools, opens a new window (grades 6-8) and Explora for Secondary Schools, opens a new window (grades 9-12) work similarly. You can keyword search “Women’s History” or Explore all topics and select "W" to browse various topics.  

Lincoln Library Online, opens a new window is an excellent resource for learners of all ages. Keyword searching “Women’s History” finds over 1,400 results!

Special Event

Join us at Main Library, Thursday, March 19 from 6-8:30 p.m. for The American Revolution: Screening, Panel, and Digital Exhibition, opens a new window. In collaboration with PBS Western Reserve, this free event will include a digital exhibition of materials from the American Revolution era, an abbreviated screening of the new Ken Burns film, and a panel discussion led by experts on the subject of women, literature, and the revolution. Reserve your spot and register on the PBS Western Reserve website.
