Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County to Host Akron Children’s Mobile Care Unit at Main Library

The Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County (PLYMC) will host the Akron Children’s Mobile Care Unit on Thursday, November 6, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Main Library, 305 Wick Avenue, Youngstown. This initiative stems from a collaboration between Akron Children’s and the Ronald McDonald House Charities of Northeast Ohio (RMHCNEO), which identified the greater Youngstown tri-county area as a region facing barriers to accessible pediatric care. In response, RMHCNEO generously donated a fully outfitted mobile care vehicle exclusively for use in Mahoning, Trumbull, and Columbiana Counties—the only one of its kind in the Akron Children’s network.

The Akron Children’s Mobile Care Unit functions as a full-service, primary care office on wheels, offering both well-child and sick visits for patients from birth to age 21. The unit also features onboard point-of-care lab testing for conditions such as strep, flu, COVID-19, mono, and urinalysis. Walk-ins are welcome, making care even more accessible for families who may not have a regular pediatrician or face transportation challenges.

Strengthening Community Connections
Hosting the Mobile Care Unit at Main Library underscores PLYMC’s commitment to being more than a place for books—it is a trusted community hub where families can access essential resources and services.

“At the Library, we believe in connecting our community with the resources they need to thrive,” said Aimee Fifarek, PLYMC Director & CEO. “By partnering with Akron Children’s, we’re helping ensure that families in our community have access to quality health care, right where they live, work, and learn.”

“At Akron Children’s, we know strong community partnerships are key to better health for every child,” said Paul Olivier, VP of Mahoning Valley Enterprises. “By working with Ronald McDonald House Charities of Northeast Ohio and local organizations, we’re bringing quality, compassionate care directly to families by removing barriers and ensuring every child has access to the care they deserve.”
