Throughout November and December, the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County (PLYMC) is collecting food donations at all 14 of its branches. Thanks to the generosity of library patrons and staff, all donated items are now being distributed to local organizations serving individuals and families experiencing food insecurity across Mahoning County.
“This year, we’ve seen the need for food support in our community grow in a way we simply couldn’t ignore,” said Aimee Fifarek, PLYMC Director and CEO. “As a public library, we are here to meet people where they are—whether that is offering free access to information and technology or helping hungry families. We knew we had to step up, and the response from our patrons and supporters in the community shows that we are not alone in that commitment.”
Earlier this year, PLYMC partnered with the Children’s Hunger Alliance to provide free lunches to children and teens throughout the summer at select branches. This food drive builds on that commitment, extending the Library’s role in meeting the needs of the community by helping ensure that no one goes hungry during the holidays.
The donated food is being distributed to a variety of organizations, including:
- Regional food banks
- Faith-based food pantries
- Neighborhood resource organizations
- Shelters and rescue missions
- Volunteer-driven community food program
The Library invites all community members to join this effort by visiting any of our 14 branches and contributing to the ongoing food drive. Whether you are dropping off items or spreading the word, every act of support helps make a meaningful difference for local families this holiday season.
