The Public Library of Youngstown & Mahoning County (PLYMC) helped collect 204 pints of blood in January through five blood drives hosted at library locations across Mahoning County.
In total, 516 pints were collected across 16 blood drives countywide during the month. Although just 31% of the county’s blood drives were held at library sites, those drives accounted for 40% of all pints collected, an outsized contribution that underscores the library’s role as a vital community partner.
“The American Red Cross is experiencing a severe blood shortage, with hospital demand outpacing our current supply,” said Christy Peters, regional communications director for the Red Cross Northern Ohio Region. “Community partners like the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County play a critical role in meeting the need for blood by hosting blood drives that bring in lifesaving donations. We could not meet patient needs without their support.”
“We’re honored to serve as a partner in something that directly saves lives,” said Zak Kozberg, Chief Stakeholder Relations Officer. “This is what a public library is here for, showing up for the community in practical, meaningful ways.”
PLYMC regularly partners with community organizations to host programs and events that meet essential needs across Mahoning County. By serving as accessible, trusted gathering spaces, library branches help connect residents with opportunities to support one another, including lifesaving blood donations.
