The Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County Honors the Legacy of Former Director Carlton A. Sears

The Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County (PLYMC) honors the legacy of Carlton A. Sears, who served as Director of the Library from 1997 to 2012 and helped guide the institution during a period of significant growth and development.

Mr. Sears passed away recently, and the library recognizes his lasting contributions to PLYMC and to the residents of Mahoning County.

During his tenure, the library expanded and strengthened its countywide presence. Several branch libraries that continue to serve the public today were planned and constructed during this period, reflecting a long-term commitment to accessible library services and modern facilities throughout the county.

Under his leadership, PLYMC advanced its mission as a public institution dedicated to literacy, learning, and community service. The organizational decisions made during this time continue to influence the library’s work and operations.

“Carlton A. Sears led the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County during a pivotal period in its history,” said Carole Weimer, President of the PLYMC Board of Trustees. “His tenure helped shape a countywide library system that expanded access, strengthened public service, and reflected the library’s long-term commitment to the communities it serves.”

Current Library leadership noted the importance of recognizing the institution’s history and the leaders who helped shape it.

“The work done during Carlton A. Sears’s time as director continues to influence how we serve Mahoning County today,” said Aimee Fifarek, Director & CEO. “His leadership helped lay a foundation that allows the library to grow, adapt, and remain responsive to the needs of residents across our system.”

The Public Library of Youngstown & Mahoning County remains committed to serving the community while honoring the history and leadership that have contributed to the library’s growth and continued public service.
