The Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County (PLYMC) announces 37% increase in Summer Discovery registration.

The Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County (PLYMC) released its first round of Summer Discovery registration numbers. Registrations for PLYMC’s annual program total 4,101 as of June 9th, 2026, a massive increase from the 2,983 registrations as of June 9th 2025- a year-to-year increase of 37%.

PLYMC’s annual Summer Discovery encourages participants of all ages to build reading into their daily routine by tracking the number of days they read.  Between May 26 and July 31, participants who complete 45 days of reading will receive a free prize book.

“Our Summer Discovery program is one of the most exciting ways we bring our community together around reading and learning. We’re thrilled to see such a strong start this year, with more individuals, families, and groups joining in.” said PLYMC Chief Experience Officer Erin Phemester. “Reading is a lifelong skill that supports personal growth, well-being, and success at every stage of life.” continued Phemester.  “It’s something everyone can enjoy, and we’re proud to create opportunities that make reading accessible, fun, and meaningful for our entire community.”

The strongest increase is the adult program (a 19% increase from 2025) and the group program. Group registrations consist of day camps, pre-schools, and other children’s programs that require reading at least once a day on the days they gather. These group registrations have increased from 211 in 2025 to 885 in 2026, a 319% increase.

“This community shows up to the library. It’s incredible to see friends of all ages participating in this impactful way.” Said Chief Stakeholder Relations Officer Zak Kozberg
