The Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County (PLYMC) hosts a Bullying and Violence Prevention program presented by Akron Children’s Hospital. On Tuesday August 11th and Friday August 14th, Akron Children’s Hospital will present Sandy Hook Promise’s Start with Hello program. Developed for children grades K-12, the program teaches youth to recognize lonely or socially isolated peers, learn ways to make others feel included, and create a culture of inclusion and kindness.
“The Sandy Hook Promise programs, Start with Hello and Say Something, teach youth to recognize the warning signs of someone at risk of hurting themselves or others and how to identify and share this with a trusted adult,” said Francine McBride, Akron Children’s Mahoning Valley Regional Advocacy Community Outreach and Education Coordinator. “The programs also teach young people how to recognize lonely or socially isolated peers and provide ways to make others feel included in order to create a culture of kindness. Akron Children’s collaborates with the library to provide a safe and supportive environment where this important information can be shared with children in the community.”
Springfield Branch Supervisor Jennifer Hemphill said "We are excited to partner with Akron Children's to offer the Sandy Hook Promise's Say Something Bullying and Violence program to help our community's youth identify warning signs of someone in need.”
The library continues to build strong community connections to better serve the needs of Mahoning County residents.
